Poverty Reduction & Livelihood Development

Although the Lao PDR economy is growing fast, the country is still one of the poorest in South East Asia. Poverty rates have decreased significantly; however, rates of poverty in rural areas are still almost twice that of the urban populations.

Working with Heifer International, PEDA has delivered programs to rural populations in Bolikhamxay Province focused on sustainable economic development. Through implementation of the ‘12 Cornerstones for Just and Sustainable Community Development’, PEDA presented training to established self-help groups on livestock farming and fish farming, biogas production, and gardening. At the core of the training was the concept of ‘Passing on the gift’, teaching the benefits of caring and sharing success with others to achieve economic sustainability.
