'Ban Nork' Self-Sustaining Communities

Background & Purpose

PEDA has worked extensively within rural and remote communities throughout Laos, witnessing firsthand the poverty that exists within many areas, with daily income averaging $2-3. Through this work PEDA have also become aware of the desire of villagers to improve their situation and through discussions have identified opportunities to work towards alleviating this poverty.

This Project focuses on empowering local communities, giving them the skills and knowledge to be able to build a sustainable income source and improve their overall living conditions.

By working with local artisans producing a range of products including silk and silk products, silver jewelry, wood carvings, woven bamboo baskets, clay pottery and traditional paintings, PEDA would support increased sustainability of their businesses. Support would be provided in the form of materials and equipment, establishment of supply chains (removing the middle man) and a shop front in Vientiane for sales.

Following a year of successful project implementation, the next phase would focus on the concept of 'passing it on', sharing the profits from the sales with new project participants and thereby building upon the concept of a sustainable community.
